Mobile First Approach

Mobile First Approach

As you've probably guessed from the name of this approach to site design, mobile first means designing an online experience for mobile before designing it for the desktop Web—or any other device. In the past, when users' focus was on the desktop Web, mobile design was an afterthought

'Mobile First Strategy' Mobile first strategy is trend in website development where designing a website for smartphones, tablets and mobile devices takes priority over desktop web design.
Design for smaller screens first, then add more features and content for bigger and bigger screens. This design approach is also known as "progressive enhancement.

According to recent research , "desktop only has been on a pretty steady decline since 2014, dropping from 19.1% to 10.6%. On the other hand, mobile only has been on the rise with no expectations to slow down. Considering the trend, desktop viewing may no longer be the norm.  Therefore, it’s important to optimize on the devices your audience is using, and not those they aren’t.

The problem with mobile first is that you might not fully "brainstorm" all the possibilities. Your mind is so focused on creating a minimal subset that you might miss some good ideas. As you design for larger displays you then realize the ideas you missed earlier. In the desktop first approach you create a fuller set of possibilities from the very start and get a "big picture" view of the app. I think it's useful to create a prototype of the full version to get all the ideas out, and then go ahead and do mobile-first with that clearer understanding.
